Gender plays a role in the risks of fibromyalgia. Women are much more likely to be affected by the condition than men.
Age is also among the factors as fibromyalgia seems to develop between the ages of 20 and 50 however, it can also occur in children and elderly persons.
While it is still unproven as to whether sleep patterns are a cause or a symptom of fibromyalgia, people with sleeping disorders including nighttime leg muscle spasms, restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea may develop fibromyalgia.
If you have a family history of fibromyalgia you may also be at a higher risk of developing the condition.
If you have a rheumatic condition including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and ankylosing spondylitis, you may be at a higher risk of developing fibromyalgia.
